It’s Appalachian Bluegrass Night at The Grey Eagle with Town Mountain and Steve ‘Big Daddy’ McMurry

Review and Photos by Lori Sky Twohy

Asheville, NC’s bluegrass band Town Mountain who is releasing their fourth album, Leave the Bottle, September 4th played an amazing show at the Grey Eagle a few weeks ago to a full audience on a very hot summer Appalachian night.

Like I said, it was a very hot night, but the band was even hotter, playing their hearts out to a hard dancing crowd, who didn’t even care they were sweating their tails off.

Founded in 2005, Town Mountain is Phil Barker on mandolin and vocals, Robert Greer on lead vocals and guitar, Jesse Langlais on banjo and vocals, Bobby Britt on fiddle, and newest member Jon Stickley on bass, guitar and vocals and on this night they also had Acoustic Syndicates Steve ‘Big Daddy’ McCurry open up the show and sit in later.

Banjo player extraordinaire and longtime member of the Sam Bush Band, Scott Vestal, also joined the team by engineering the new album, which was recorded at Digital Underground Studio in Nashville, TN.

Living in Asheville, we are accustomed to hearing and seeing a lot of bluegrass at almost every venue, but there was just something about these guys that stood apart from the rest. I personally enjoy bluegrass very much, but can honestly say that this was the first time that I ever stopped and went “wow” while dancing non stop.

They will be back in AVL someday soon, I’m sure, and I will be back with a vengeance and hope you will to.
